Profile

I have been a lifelong sailor, boat owner, and marine journalist. I have logged more than 60,000 nautical miles at sea, exploring the East Coast of the US and the entire Eastern Caribbean from the US and BVI to Grenada. I have made more than 12 round-trip deliveries on my boats and OPB from Maine to the Caribbean, which included trips via Bermuda, down the ICW to Florida, the Bahamas, and back.

Availability

I am available to serve as a project manager on yacht refits and new builds. I am also available for magazine assignments as a journalist, writer, photographer, and media producer.

Maritime Skills

I specialize in small boat handling, coastal, celestial and electronic navigation, watch standing, route planning, weather routing, engine and systems maintenance, yacht cosmetic maintenance, radio communications, safety and survival practices, crew training, and mentoring. I possess extensive knowledge of the entire US East Coast and the Eastern Caribbean, spanning from the Virgin Islands to Grenada, including Bermuda.


Recent Experience (OPB)

Various professional deliveries of OPB, Newport to the Eastern Caribbean. Most recent deliveries;

2021 offshore delivery, Newport to St. Maarten of Schatz Sea, a Southerly 54. 2022 offshore delivery, Antigua to Annapolis, aboard Oasis, a Tayana 48.

2019 - 2020 offshore delivery, Maine Antigua, then down to Martinique aboard The Dove, 54-foot Expedition cutter

Yacht Ownership

QUINTA, a 32-foot Alden Barnacle (wood) sloop—owned from 1969 to 1978. Sailed from Lake Champlain to Long Island Sound, to Cape Cod, to Boothbay, Maine. Spent 10 years cruising from Maine to Newport, RI.

FAIR-THEE-WELL, 42-foot (wood) Geared Hendle designed sloop—1978 to 1985. Sailed from Maine to the Caribbean and back in 1981. Sailed from Maine to Cape May, the ICW to Florida, then over to the Bahamas in 1984, then back to Maine in 1985.

AFARAN, a 41-foot Lord Nelson cutter. First owner, 1985 to 1995.  Outfitted the vessel in Ft. Lauderdale in 1985, then sailed offshore to the USVI. Sailed solo from the BVI to Maine. Made that round trip voyage (Maine to the USVI)  5 times. Survived three hurricanes at anchor with no loss or grounding.

SEARCHER, Bowman 57 ketch—1996 to 2012. Three round trip voyages, Maine to the Caribbean (one solo). I owned SEARCHER for 14 years and completed three major refits, including new decks, electrical and navigation systems replacement, sails, rudder and shaft replacement, cosmetic upgrades, spar and rig upgrades, canvas, and galley upgrades. Spent 2009 and 2010 living on board with the family, sailing from Maine to the Caribbean via Bermuda, exploring the entire Eastern Caribbean, and returning to Maine the summer of 2010.


Professional Background

I have worked as a magazine writer, editor, and photographer. Founder of The Maine Photographic Workshops, an international conservatory for the world’s storytellers and image-makers, Rockport, Maine.
